Summary: BB doesn't fully understand marriage, and one thing led to another. Now Olette won't speak to him, and he's afraid he's going to lose all the friends he has. TIME FOR SUPER DAD TO SAVE THE DAY.
the Story:
This may have been the saddest day of Beast Boy's life. Well, not really, but you try telling a almost-ten-year-old that.
Sitting on the floor in his room, the little shape shifter desperately tried to weave some yarn together. It was tiring and frustrating, but it was starting to get fun now that he actually started doing it right! Maybe he should do more crafts from now on!
Even as he was weaving the red and black yarn together for Axel's friendship bracelet, he still was feeling rather down. He'd managed to stop crying but... it hurt to think his friends didn't want him around. It hurt him even more that he couldn't remember any of these friends from before.
They were the only friends he had. The Doom Patrol was family, yeah, but they couldn't be his friends, not really. They didn't always have time to play pretend with him and talk about dinosaurs and have fun with.
As he's making his friendship bracelet, he wonders a little how close he and Harry were (supposed to be).

"Garfield? It's Harry."
A bit of shuffling and "oof, this is hard to balance" is heard behind it.
"Can I come in?"
no subject
"Harry! HARRRRYYYYYYYY."
He scrambles to the door (but not before carefully placing Axel's unfinished friendship bracelet to the side), opening it and smiling. The only thing ruining his overall happy appearance are his bloodshot eyes and runny nose.

In one hand, Harry carries a box of tissues, and tries to balance a glass of soy milk and vegan cookies in the other hand. A bit difficult.
"Hey, Garfield. How are you feeling?"
no subject
"Are... those for me?" Without waiting for a real answer, BB grabs one of the cookies and devours it in a single gulp. Pausing to remember his manners, he says in a small voice "Thank you."
Taking Harry's hand, Beast Boy leads him further into the room, carefully picking up Axel's bracelet.
"I'm still sad. But making friendship bracelets is making me feel a little better. This one's for Axel!" He turns to smile a little at Harry. "What colors do you want yours to be, Harry?"
no subject
He has to pause, then laugh a little. "You're welcome, Garfield."
If anything, he's just relieved to see the poor kid acting more like himself. The writer lets himself be led further into the room, setting the milk and cookies down at a nearby table.
"Hm? Me? Uh." Harry rubs the back of his head. "I like brown, and... I like orange, I geuss?" He grins. "You're making bracelets? That's a good idea. But before anything else."
He kneels down to get to Beast Boy's level, reaching to give the green boy a hug.
"There."
no subject
The little nine year old hugs back fiercely and doesn't let go. If he lets go, Harry might leave.
"I'm sorry. I dunno what I did, but I'm sorry" Oh great, he's sniffling again. He shouldn't be crying in front of people, let alone an adult, but he can't really help it. "I'msorryI'msorryI'msorry..."
no subject
He's so... small and easier to pick up now (and not too much older than Cheryl when he first lost her). Harry slowly sits down and gently pulls the boy into his lap, still hugging him, gently patting his back.
"It's okay. Just tell me what happened; I bet you didn't do anything wrong. You're a good boy."
no subject
"I. I don't. I just wanted friends! I didn't want you guys to leave cuz all my friends in Africa are dead and I don't have any real ones in the Doom Patrol and-and-and. I thought... people who get married love each other and stay together, right? I thought I married all my friends, they'd stay with me!"
Beast Boy grabs one of the tissues to blow his nose and throws it carelessly across the floor. "I asked Olette. And Roxas. And Axel. And Nuriko. And Triangle Man. And River. And you. And then Olette got mad and now she hates me and Nuriko is gonna marry me but I don't have a cake and Axel says I'll understand marriage when I'm older but I'm not older and everyone wants me to be!"
His tears were starting to soak his mask. Beast Boy carefully reached up to remove it, exposing a young, sad face underneath. A young sad face with two little diamonds sharpied under the eyes.
no subject
He smiles faintly, and tries not to laugh at the sharpied diamonds. Someone's been to see Axel, clearly.
"Garfield, marriage isn't about keeping friends forever. Believing in someone is just enough for that." He grins wryly. "Marrying someone means it's... well. How much do you remember your parents...? It's more like that. It's something between just two people, who love each other in a different way than how you love your friend."
He grins and gently ruffles Beast Boy's hair, looking at his younger face. "We are your friends, Garfield. You don't have to marry us to keep us here with you."
no subject
He probably shouldn't be discussing his past. Super heroes do not discuss their mysterious backgrounds. That's what makes Batman and Axel so gosh darn cool. But it made him feel a little better to talk all about it.
Beast Boy wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, smearing the sharpie marks a little. "I don't think Galtry was married, but he had a lot of ladies over and he didn't deserve to be married. And if the jewel thieves were married to each other..." He shivered a little, clinging closer to Harry. "There was so much blood..."
He shook his head a little. He was getting way off-topic. "I love everyone the same. I didn't know there was a difference. But. Please don't leave me, Harry."
For once, he wasn't a super hero. He was a scared little kid who just wanted his friends and family to be with him. "Please don't leave, Harry."
no subject
The words confuse him, really. What happened to Beast Boy's parents? King Tawaba? Galtry? Blood?
God, there's really so much he needs to learn more about from Beast Boy.
"You made a silly mistake, that's all. Don't beat yourself up over that." Harry grins a little. "It's no reason to ever leave you, or hate you. We love you, Garfield. We really do. And... you may not remember it now, but I know in some of my worst moments, you were there to help me. Because you're a wonderful friend, and... a good son."
no subject
For a minute, he just pauses to catch his breath and let Harry hold him. "...I wish you were my dad, Harry."
There. He said it. He loved Mento, but he couldn't compare to Harry. "Steve... Mento. He never did stuff like this. When we went after the Brotherhood last time... I got caught. Then Monsieur Mallah got me, and he kept squeezing and I couldn't breathe and I blacked out for a minute."
Almost robotically, with a blank expression on his face, he said, "I should have done better. I shouldn't have distracted Steve. I shouldn't have disobeyed him. Good thing he didn't try to waste his time saving me."
no subject
What kind of father... what the hell kind of father didn't go to save his own son?
"No, Garfield." God, it takes all of Harry's will to not make his voice shake in rage or squeeze the boy too tight.
"No, that's wrong. I don't really care what kind of hero Mento thinks he is, but no one ever abandons their own child under any circumstance. If he has the nerve to name himself your guardian, then he would have done everything to save you."
Harry walked through hell. He went through that damned town for Cheryl. She kept him alive.
Because that's what a parent does. They would and should do everything in their power for their child.
"You don't know it now," Harry says, a bit more gently. "But. Well, I'll tell it to you, anyway. You are like a son to me, Garfield. One I'm incredibly proud of. You love your friends so much, and that alone would make me care about you -- but I've gotten to know you, deep down. Everything that makes you who you are."
He shakes his head. "I don't know what the hell-- heck Mento was thinking, but you should have been his first priority. Because no matter how many times I'm sure he's had to save the world or something, a parent knows who their world really revolves around."
no subject
Oh to heck with it.
"You would've saved me, wouldn't you Harry? You would've let the Brotherhood of Evil get away and sacrificed the mission and you're not supposed to do that!" He's gripping Harry's shirt too tightly, but if he lets go, he might just break down completely. He's so jealous of whatever kid was lucky enough to be Harry's kid.
"You're. Y-you're supposed to leave them behind. B-but I didn't and they got away and I'm a bad hero. I just."
His face goes blank again, one of the most unnerving expressions for a small child to have. "I should've died. Then the Brotherhood wouldn't have gotten away and Steve might've actually been proud of me."
no subject
He shakes his head. "I don't care what Steve taught you. That's not how it works. That's not how families are, that's definitely not what a hero is. No one should ever be left behind."
Gently, he pushes Beast Boy back, if only so he can put his hands onto his shoulders and look at him firmly. "Anyone who leaves someone they love behind for anything else is just heartless. And if you died... I'd be a very sad man. If Steve would be proud of you for dying, then he's a horrible father, and a terrible hero."
no subject
Beast Boy wipes his eyes again, loudly sniffling. "You're. You're right. Mento... he needs to shape up. He needs to know what a real hero is."
He grabs the hands that are resting on his shoulders, his eyes flaring with determination and smiling confidently. "If... when I get back, I'm gonna tell Steve all about you. Set an example about what a good hero and a good dad is supposed to be!"
This time, he's getting worked up in an entirely different way. The little shape shifter leaps to his feat, hands clenched and head held high.
"And if he doesn't like it, I'll leave! I'll join up with the Justice League, or. Or I'll start my own super hero team! One with only kids like me!"
Just for dramatic effect, he starts humming his own off-key theme song under his breath.
no subject
Hopefully, Steve would listen.
He grins and ruffles Beast Boy's hair. "That's more like it," he approves. "A real hero acts with his heart. Remember that, okay, Garfield?"
no subject
The little hero (a title he'll always wear with pride) beams at Harry. "Yes, sir! I've, uh. I've got it memorized!"
In a motion that is more suited to a frog than a boy, Beast Boy leaps back into Harry's lap and snatches the cookies, shoving several into his mouth.
"You know," he squeaks through a mouthful of crumbs. "You know, sometimes I kinda wanna be a regular kid. You would make me lunches, and Roxas would go biking with me and we wouldn't be bothered by the 'splosions in the city..."
Smiling again, he puts his mask back on and holds a cookie out to Harry. "But I bet most kids wanna be super heroes! I think that's kinda weird. People are weird. We keep wanting to be something else when we're just fine the way we are!"
