There's such a fine line between the things that you are
Who: The Tenth Doctor and open.
Where: Starting out in the Doctor's room on the sixth floor and going from there.
When: Throughout the event.
Rating: PG-13.
Summary: Event catch-all post.
The Story:
August 9, morning
The Doctor doesn't sleep, not usually, and when he does, it's only for a bit at a time, maybe just an hour or two. There's far too much to do to waste time on sleep, especially when he barely needs it at all. That's one of the key differences between himself as a Time Lord and humans.
But this morning, the Doctor's sprawled out on his bed, and from the looks of things, it's been more than an hour since he fell asleep. Of course, even with that, he's still a light sleeper, so soon enough, he stirs and opens his eyes.
"Well, that was a bit longer than I'd intended. What time is it, then?" He muses to himself as he sits up and swings his long legs over the side of the bed. But just as he's asked that question, he freezes in place and his eyes widen.
"What-?"
Suddenly, all thought of having a leisurely wake-up goes flying right out of the Doctor's head, replaced by the panicked realization that something is wrong. Standing up, he grabs his coat off the stand in the room (he fell into bed fully dressed, so there's no need to see to that), and all but flings open his door, stepping out into the hallway.
Oh, thank the stars, there's someone coming around the corner right now. It doesn't matter who it is, just that it's a person, and right now, the Doctor has a very important question to ask them. He approaches at a rapid clip, and once they're in speaking distance, he puts forward his question.
"Erm, excuse me, but I was wondering: are you feeling quite all right this morning? Did you notice anything strange at all when you woke up? It's very important that you tell me, if you can."
Because as far as the Doctor can tell, he's just been turned into a human somehow, and well, it's startling, to say the least.
August 9th to 11th, anywhere
Now that the initial shock has faded, and the Doctor's mostly worked through his panic about finding himself completely human but still retaining memories of being anything but that, he's actually relatively relaxed.
Granted, it's strange and he really dislikes the limitations that being in a human body has imposed on him, but other than that, it's really not so terrible.
At least, it wouldn't have been terrible if this were an ordinary stretch of time in the mansion, but as luck would have it, there's a resurgence of angels and demons wandering about, and honestly, the Doctor's not sure how to deal with that.
Hiding in his room seems like cowardice, but going out to face them seems just a bit dangerous, now that his normal defenses are gone.
So, what is a man to do in a situation like this? Well, clearly, the answer is to find a happy medium between the two options. And for the Doctor, that translates into spending a lot of time in the library, or in the kitchen, or walking through the mansion grounds, while keeping on the alert for any unwanted company. Said alertness tempers any enjoyment he might have gotten normally, but that's just how it's going to have to be. Oh, and of course, there's the bit about how he's got people here he needs to keep an eye on, which is one of the first things he attempts doing: locating Martha and Rose, but also Jack and Ianto.
Figures the lot of them would have gotten themselves spread out. There really aren't enough hours in the day for this sort of thing.

What he was, though, was preoccupied, so he missed that shadow that was cast over onto the grass. In fact, he had no idea anyone was there at all, at least not until Minato left his perch and spoke up.
"Oh, Minato, hello." If the slight slump of the Doctor's shoulders was anything to go by, he really wasn't feeling too pleased with this turn of events, nor with this event itself, although he still managed a smile for his friend.
"I hope you're not about to tell me you've become a demon. An angel, I might be able to live with, but as for the other? That's a bit harder to digest."
no subject
But him? As a demon? Heavens no. The thought made Minato smile though as he could hardly imagine himself as one, though it might not have been so far out of someone else's imagination to assume he might be one.
"Then I suppose you might be able to live with it."
He didn't exactly answer the Doctor directly, but that should've been a good enough hint. He did look the Doctor over, taking in his body language and just his general expression.
"Are you afraid of something? Is it because something's different?"
no subject
"That's good, then, yes."
No, it was. A little of the tension in his shoulders dissipated when he heard Minato say that. "I'm not afraid of anything, but something is different. I'm not an angel or a demon, just a human."
At least this was an event, and so it was only temporary. That was the thing the Doctor was focusing on most right now.
no subject
"But does it really matter what you are as long as you do good things?"
Minato didn't think he should be judging anyone for who or what they were. All that was really left after anyone did anything was their deeds and actions, their mark on the world.
no subject
So there they were, the Doctor as a human and Minato as an angel. He crossed his arms in front of him and looked Minato up and down. He didn't look different, but still, there was something about him that was, all appearances aside.
"So, what does being an angel mean for you? How are you different?"
no subject
"It simply means watching over people to make sure they are on the right path."
Not that humans couldn't or didn't do the same thing either, but it was one of the fundamental tasks of an angel.
"Plus we have cool wings."
Just saying. Among other things, actually.
no subject
"Right, so if that's the case, then how do you account for the presence of demons?"
He could only begin to imagine the potential conflicts that might result from that, and somehow, he doubted the results would be very pretty.
"Wings? What, can you actually fly with them?"
That would be interesting if the answer was yes, although it didn't really matter to the Doctor, who was still unfortunately every bit as land-locked as he'd been before the event began.
no subject
Although Minato right now did have the desire to lead people back from that path that could only lead to, well, downfall. But humans were humans and they did whatever they wanted, really. He didn't exactly answer the Doctor's question either. Angels and demons had always existed anyway since the beginning of time.
Minato nodded since he could answer the second question. Or really the second and third question. He tilted his head a bit, then a moment later he had feathery white wings appear behind him, though of course, they were clearly attached to him.
"I think that's enough. Don't need to show them all to you."
no subject
But now that he'd heard that, it just solidified in the Doctor's mind that maybe he ought to hide out in his room until this event ended. Although that seemed too close to cowardice for his liking, so he most likely would not be doing that. Someone needed to keep an eye on his friends, because as yet, he hadn't accounted for all of them. They could be humans like he was, or angels like Minato, or they could be demons, which was something he did not like one bit.
But he watched with fascination as Minato revealed his wings, his eyes going wide with interest. "No, that's definitely enough. It's very impressive, too."
And he could only imagine what Minato looked like with his wings fully revealed. "Thank you for showing that to me."
Because that definitely qualified as interesting, in the Doctor's book.
no subject
Minato had the inclination though to look out for the Doctor even if the Doctor could take care of himself. Sure, he did have faith in the Doctor, but the lack of free will and all.
He had his wings disappear a moment later as if they were never there to begin with.
"No problem. Maybe I should tell you what demons are capable of so you know what to look for."
no subject
Never mind that the Doctor's definition of that is a bit different.
"Well, enlighten me, if you don't mind. I've heard stories about demons, of course, but stories aren't always the most factual."
no subject
That is, with Minato as an angel too, no one should get in a drinking contest with an angel either.
"I think you'll be safe either way now."
no subject
If he were still a Time Lord and not a human, he might be able to win said contest, but the point is basically moot at the moment.
"Oh, I was always safe. I wasn't planning on entering into any confrontations with either of them." Watch from afar, yes, but get into an active confrontation? Not likely.
no subject
And Minato couldn't really ask for more than that. Even if the Doctor got himself into a bit of trouble, he could find his way out of it. Minato wasn't exactly worried.
"Sometimes I wish that all people were like you. Easy to take care of and look after. But then I wouldn't have much to do if you were all like that."
no subject
There might be some trouble afoot in the form of demons, but the Doctor's not exactly worried either.
"That makes two of us, Minato. If the people I traveled with were that way, things would be so much easier. Of course, you can't have everything you want all the time, so I don't think I'd change them either, even if I could."
It did irritate him just a bit when his traveling mates didn't remember rule one (don't wander off), but still, he's fond of them and minor things like that aren't enough to put him off taking on companions at all.
"I know I'm not much use right now, but if you find you need a hand at all, you can just ask for me, and I'll do what I can."
He figures Minato won't need his help, but he's going to put the offer out there anyway, just in case.
no subject
"People will do what they want. That's the nature of people, isn't it? Free will and all. You can only do so much."
Minato did appreciate the sentiment. Who knew, he might need to rely on the Doctor for something, and he wouldn't want to turn away or reject his help. He'd help the Doctor no matter what too.
"Thank you. I do owe you for your generosity. It's not often someone offers to help an angel."
Angels like demons weren't invincible things. Minato remembered that.
no subject
"I know, and my influence only goes so far, even when I'm not human." The Doctor just shrugged; he really couldn't make anyone do anything, not now and certainly not on a normal day. Oh, he tried to be persuasive and convincing, but really, free will was a powerful thing. Honestly, he wouldn't have that any other way.
"I suppose angels at least need friends, even if they don't need help."
Especially not help from mortals, even temporary ones.
no subject
"And having a friend is a good thing. You never know, sometimes an angel can get in some trouble. Just because we do good things doesn't mean other people or beings will too."
Demons, for one. Minato was not going to underestimate any of them.
no subject
It's not that he trusts everyone implicitly, because that's more or less impossible. But it's easy enough to spot someone who is genuine and cut from the right cloth.
"And I know that. Of course I do." He's seen that time and time again throughout his lifetime, and Minato's words just serve to make him want to help his friend out however he can, regardless of his temporary human status.
