Who: Natasha Romanoff
Where: Various
When: 10/27-10/28
Rating: PG-13
Summary: One dangerous lady just trying to go about her business.
The Story:
[Wonderland gets Natasha restless sometimes. Not because she's an impatient woman. She has to be patient in her line of work. Still, she's not used to staying in one place so long—especially being in one place without something to do. There's no mission here. No one to hire her, and no real reason to take a job even if she were offered one since money is meaningless and no one has enough power to make it worth playing along for their favor.
But all this time doing nothing, keeping her distance, keeping her head down until she sees her time to leave gets under her skin.
She goes about her day radiating a sort of cold challenge, almost daring someone to start something. The threat is palpable, riding just under the surface of her stoic expression as she goes through the motions of her day. Workout. Coffee. Food. Alcohol. More or less in that order. Later in the evening, after she's wasted time on a few glasses of vodka, she can be found on the roof lost in thought.
Not exactly outgoing, but anyone brave enough or curious enough to approach her will get a raised eyebrow and an expectant look, like she can't imagine anyone would walk up to her without a very specific purpose in mind.]

He settles down beside her as she's drinking, a position that has the ghost of familiarity to it.]
You seem bored. Getting restless?
no subject
But that doesn't mean they can't talk.
Natasha finishes her drink.] But you didn't really want the answer to that. Did you?
no subject
[And, frankly, it's a relief that she doesn't want to engage in small talk for a moment longer than necessary. This is a business transaction. Details are superfluous.]
I was more interested in the potential acquisition of your... Talents.

[He orders pours himself some scotch and sips it a moment.]
The current event seems like an appropriate time to manage it. Wouldn't you agree?
no subject
I can see why a person might see there moment now, if they were waiting.

What I've seen of your work is impeccable. It's the sort of service that might encourage a person to be able to name her price.
no subject
[But that's the rub, isn't it. What can he pay her here? And what kind of job is even worth knowing.]
But skipping ahead to talk about price when you haven't told me the job.

[Everybody wants something. One hand washes the other, even in a place like this. They'll work something out, he's sure.]
It wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary. I have a pest problem that requires an exterminator, temporary as it might be.
no subject
[Which is another consideration. It goes a long way toward explaining why Natasha's avoided killing here. Sure, she could cover her tracks, but it would still invite questions and increased suspicion. Scrutiny she's not interested in without good cause.]
If it's just a pest, though, I suggest getting a cat.
[A pest would be a waste of Natasha's time.]
no subject
[Because that's exactly the plan.]
Everyone is granted five chances here. I'd simply like this particular pest to have one less. It might make them more cautious about their footing.

One Margaret Carter. She goes by "Peggy" normally.

Early November - For Peggy & Steve
At first she'd assumed that Fitz's claim to being Hydra was a part of the event. Even as suspicious as he's been, the context of that admission made it highly unreliable.
The more she reflected, though, the more she found herself struck by the way it fit. Suddenly, so many things clicked into place. The conclusion is impossible to ignore.
Which leads her in the end to seek out her allies here. If he is Hydra, her first choices are clear. She sets out with purpose, putting her frustrations aside in favor of doing something productive.]

So, he moves on to the gym determined to forget. He makes a good go of it- working his way through two reinforced punching bags and on to the third before Natasha seeks him out.
He looks up when she enters and he can tell by the look on her face that it’s importants. He steadies the bag and steps away from it, ignore his bloody knuckles Nat, they’ll heal. ]
What’s going on?
no subject
She doesn't remark on it, though. Not now at least. She can pretend they both have a little privacy where emotions are concerned. Instead, she simply says:] We have a problem.
no subject
Tell me.
[ Problems they could deal with, together. This was a familiar situation. ]
no subject
Are you aware of the situation with Agent Fitz?
[That seems like the place to start.]
no subject
We believe he’s the one who killed Claire. Has anything else come up about him?
[ Because Steve hasn’t heard anything else on the subject yet. ]
no subject
[Dry understatement.]
I've been suspecting something off about him since he left and came back. He claimed it was a head injury at the time.
[And at the time, she'd bee working on instinct only. Even now she doesn't have much by way of proof. No real evidence.]
I have reason to believe it's a little less benign than that.
no subject
Peggy said the same, that’s why she sent him to see Claire. [ Something he knows she feels guilty about. ]
What do you think? [ Whatever it is he trusts her and her instincts, he knows she is mostly likely right in her assumptions. ]
no subject
[She pauses, but she doesn't actually intend to draw out the anticipation that much.]
But I have reason to believe he's Hydra. Or thinks he is. [Shrugging one shoulder.] Still a few details to suss out.
no subject
Of course it’s Hydra. Even in a pocket dimension they are somehow still around. We should definitely go find Peggy, she needs to know before he realizes she’s watching him.
no subject
We can continue this conversation while we walk.
[Because of course Peggy is surveilling Agent Fitz.]
no subject
When they get to her door he knocks quickly hoping she’s actually in there. ]
