Who: Natasha Romanoff
Where: Various
When: 10/27-10/28
Rating: PG-13
Summary: One dangerous lady just trying to go about her business.

The Story:

[Wonderland gets Natasha restless sometimes. Not because she's an impatient woman. She has to be patient in her line of work. Still, she's not used to staying in one place so long—especially being in one place without something to do. There's no mission here. No one to hire her, and no real reason to take a job even if she were offered one since money is meaningless and no one has enough power to make it worth playing along for their favor.

But all this time doing nothing, keeping her distance, keeping her head down until she sees her time to leave gets under her skin.

She goes about her day radiating a sort of cold challenge, almost daring someone to start something. The threat is palpable, riding just under the surface of her stoic expression as she goes through the motions of her day. Workout. Coffee. Food. Alcohol. More or less in that order. Later in the evening, after she's wasted time on a few glasses of vodka, she can be found on the roof lost in thought.

Not exactly outgoing, but anyone brave enough or curious enough to approach her will get a raised eyebrow and an expectant look, like she can't imagine anyone would walk up to her without a very specific purpose in mind.]

I remember that post. [ It didn’t sit well with him then, and it still didn’t. ]

Peggy said the same, that’s why she sent him to see Claire. [ Something he knows she feels guilty about. ]

What do you think? [ Whatever it is he trusts her and her instincts, he knows she is mostly likely right in her assumptions. ]

[ He’s tempted to tell her to talk to Peggy herself and then she mentions Hydra. He bites back a curse. ]

Of course it’s Hydra. Even in a pocket dimension they are somehow still around. We should definitely go find Peggy, she needs to know before he realizes she’s watching him.

[ Steve falls in line with her as they head out of the gym towards Peggy’s room. He knows Natasha probably wants to tell them both what she’s learned at the same time so he refrains from asking anything else as they walk.

When they get to her door he knocks quickly hoping she’s actually in there.

[ what luck -- peggy is at home. hers have been a quiet few days, recovering from the emotional marathon of the last event. being that version of herself had been like stretching muscles she'd not used in years. soft civilian muscles, where care and consideration were given in due course to things peggy herself more often overlooks. general manners, for one.

but she's intent on being herself again. so when she answers the door -- dressed in blouse and skirt and heels, looking every inch like herself -- she sees the pair of them waiting in the hall and doesn't for a moment entertain anything close to being polite. or welcoming. ]

-- What's happened?

[ because something must have happened for the both of them to be here. her attention settles a moment longer on steve than it does on natasha, as if his presence is the real tip-off that something's got terribly wrong.

she'd been avoiding him too, after all. ]

[ It’s easy to stay in Captain mode when he is presented with information like this. He can ignore the slight tension that’s obvious between him and Peggy because this is more important. ]

This information shouldn’t be shared in the hallway. [ He’s not sure if Peggy wants them inside so he leaves that up to her, to invite them in or suggest a place to go where prying ears can’t hear them. ]

[ the bottom drops out of her stomach.

her worst fears have come to roost. the little signposts had been there all along: the adversarial nature, the murder, the attempt to cover it up by instigating an inhuman race war. his cockiness, his evaporated empathy, his so much of him. peggy thinks for a second -- glances over her shoulder at an old jewellery box sitting on her dresser -- and has to wonder where things went so wrong.

is this how shield falls in the future? will she be as blind then as she is now to hydra's influence? a soft blue curse worms its way under her breath but before she can invite the pair of them inside, an old indignation flares up.

gently, quietly, she grabs her coat from where it hangs just inside the room. peggy closes her door. ]

He's bugged me once before. [ innocently, she imagines, back then. but now she can't be sure of anything. ] My room mightn't be secure. We ought to take this outside.

[ He’s not surprised that Peggy suggests they take the conversation outside- he is surprised when she says he has bugged her room before. Though he probably shouldn’t be considering he is apparently Hydra. ]

I know a good place.

[ He leads them out to the shooting range, he had the last convoersafion about Fitz here so it seemed appropriate, plus it felt like pretty neutral ground. If people were right and it was built by Clint then he also trusted it- felt more at ease here even if it was just for his own piece of mind.

Once they were settled he turned to Natasha.
]

What did you find out?

[ the walk feels longer than it is. every step is heavy -- and each one puts more knots in her stomach. journeying from the mansion to the range gives her too much time to think. hydra's name has been floated 'round the topic before now, mostly as peggy has tried to contextualize what it might mean to confront a turncoat, but she'd never applied it to the man in earnest. now she feels she has to.

and has to wonder who flipped him and how. in a rare fit of anxiety, she chews a shallow wound into the inside of her cheek. peggy tastes blood the entire distance. there are a set of papers, a report, back in her quarters that begin to make her wonder...

but before she can put that wonder to words, natasha gives her report. peggy receives the news with a stoic expression. it wouldn't be the first time someone's attempted to put a hit on her -- and there's no use in nurturing the sudden pique she feels. they have far far far bigger and meaner fish to fry than whatever the mansion did to them this past turn. although, with a chilly realization, she knows natasha could have easily taken her out during that last event. she'd been a soft and sentimental civilian for its duration. ]

You're right. [ peggy finally speaks up -- flint creeping through her voice. ] You must be right. Whatever that event did to him, it must have worked to reveal what he'd otherwise been trying to conceal.

[ conceal at the cost of murder and social upheaval. the unspoken accusation makes her feel nauseous. ]

He must be awfully high-placed to figure he could offer you so much. [ all of hydra's resources. ] Or awfully desperate to see me gone.

[ she glances back at the mansion. ]

Right. No more prevaricating. [ this is an order given as much to herself as to anyone else. ] Whether he's a damned HYDRA head or a measly squirming tentacle -- he needs to be taken off the board.

[ not killed, per se, because what good does that do in a place where death is impermanent? but removed from the general population, certainly. it's funny how that one word -- hydra -- stirs up so much action in her. ]

[ Steve reaction to Natasha’s account is visible- a clenched jaw and hands curling into fists. But he knows better than to say anything- especially anything that might mean Peggy can’t look out for herself. But it does put him on guard, Claire already died he’s not going to let that happen to Peggy as well.

He’s wanted to act for weeks now- he’s not good at sitting still and waiting for information to fall into place, he’s been antsy and being able to do something now is almost a relief.
]

What do you propose then? [ There’s no law enforcement here and he knows how people react when they try and put something like that in place here, but there has to be something they can do. ]

A warning isn't good enough.

[ peggy picks at a loose splinter of wood -- peeling it away from a post demarcating one firing lane from the other. her tongue clicks against the back of her front teeth. she's weighing old thoughts and processing new ones. it rends her heart that whenever she thinks of fitz, now, all she can really see is reinhardt across the table. smug and self-certain and so so so brimming over with conviction. is that fitz now? it can't possibly have been fitz always. ]

No, he's been ahead of us this whole time. [ a brief conciliatory look towards natasha. she'd tried to tell peggy, after all, that she'd had a hunch. ] I don't want to give him any more of a lead than he's already got. A warning shot...

[ she trails off. ]

We isolate him. We get him to admit, outside of an event, what he is. HYDRA does its most damaging work in the shadows. If we can expose him then he's got no currency to trade on with the rest of the mansion. No sympathies to pluck. [ it'll mean burning a helluva lot of fitz's own bridges, she imagines, but hasn't he already done that himself? ] And it just might buy us enough time to fix him.

[ the word is said viciously. it's clear, then, that she's made up her mind: this can't have been as long a con as she first feared. something changed. ]

We expose him publicly.

[ It’s both a question and a statement. Steve can’t help but think of Pierce right now, of Shield and how they took them down. By exposing them to the world so they couldn’t hide. This might not be as big of a world as back home but it’s their world right now and it has people he cares about.

His gaze docked between both women standing there, one was his partner in the past and the other was currently and he trusted both them and their plans more than anyone else in the world. He’d follow their lead.

You're right. Most people don't know HYDRA. But more than a few of them know what a Nazi is.

[ she is ruthlessly comfortable in tying the two together. and why shouldn't she be? as far as her career is concerned, the two have been devilishly intertwined. indistinguishable. she stands with her shoulders square and her allegiances solid. no matter what dispensation she may give to the how and why of it happening, it doesn't change the fact that there is no shade of grey to a nazi. not in her mind. and others, those who have approached her quietly and alone, have already noticed the similarity between fitz's rhetoric and that black stain on humanity.

natasha's reasons are good ones. optics are important, certainly, but peggy's never cared enough about how her own reputation suffers. she feels compelled -- urged -- to expose the rot to daylight rather than give it a tender nuanced touch. ]

More than that, I daresay this iteration of the man is just proud enough to admit it openly once the facts are pressed to him. [ he must be getting tired with the upkeep of his own lie. why else would he be trying to start a supernatural race war? there's only so far that sort of wool can be pulled over their eyes. ] I'm not saying we handcuff him to a table and put the screws to him. But I'd love to see what his answer is when he's asked point blank where his loyalties lie. Not to mention...

[ peggy breathes in. finally, at long last, her attention swings back to steve. there's a minefield here, one shaped like an absent bucky barnes, and she wants to proceed delicately. ]

I have a SHIELD report in my possession concerning a programming initiative, within HYDRA, called the Faustus method. Are either of you familiar with it? It would have been employed prior to and immediately after they toppled the lion's share of the agency.

[ she waits to let the implication sink in -- or else she waits to explain it if an explanation is wanting. ]

[Steve shakes his head. Most things Natasha knows Steve knows, and vice versa. Steve hasn’t heard of it and he hasn’t really had a lot of dealings with Shield- especially in the last two years. ]

Can’t say I’ve heard of it. [ But that’s not surprising, that’s not something they would have briefed Steve on. ] more brainwashing?

More brainwashing.

[ she confirms in an echo. ]

Used against loyal SHIELD agents to compel them to cooperate -- to comply -- with HYDRA high command during the whole...ordeal. [ her arms cross solid over her chest. her tenses are all amok. used? will use? is using? the very dissonance makes her frown deepen. ] Perhaps more than SHIELD agents underwent the process. I can't be certain. It is, after all, considerably after my time.

[ here's the kicker... ]

To be perfectly transparent, I only know about it because it was described in a report Fitz himself compiled. At my request. But that was long before he was showing any signs of -- [ whatever this is. ] It was shortly after I arrived in Wonderland.

[ Steve runs a hand down his face, resting it on his chin as he listens to them talk, his mind already coming up with possibilities. He once briefly thought, after coming back from Thanos, that he missed the days of just fighting Hydra. He was definitely wrong about that. Hydra seemed to never leave him alone. ]

So what do we do?
